The frame is super light and the carbon layup is high quality. Im building a 26" hard tail for racing for my son that will likely be less than 20 lbs. Some aspects of the frame are a little out of date: press fit BB, external cable routing, 135mm rear width, external dropper, etc. But, I knew that going into the project and the result is still going to be an amazing race-ready bike. Parts can be found, but options are limited. Working with DIY Carbon Bike has been great! They shipped super fast, and provided highly detailed tracking info. Even though it was the holiday season, we got everything far ahead of their projected timeline.

Overall a good build. The water bottle mount is a little too high so had to get an adapter so it fits a larger bottle (and better center of gravity). The supplied BB was very rough and had to get new bearings. Otherwise frame is light weight and my son (8) likes it so far. Have yet to take it on a trail yet.

I bought this bike for my 9 year old, based on seeing another one in the wild. As pictured, it's sitting at 23.5 lbs. I could shave some weight with removing the inner tubs, lighter saddle, lighter brakes, etc., but it's light compared to what else is on the market. This was my first build, but I have a strong bike mechanic that fixed a few minor issues when I was done. One of the reviews had good advice on the Cane Creek 40 IS 52/30, as we had a straight fork tube as well. The shock is a RockShox Judy Gold 26" QR 100 mm width and 100 mm, and the cranks are Trailcraft, 28 tooth, 152 mm. 1X11 Shimano XT M8000. The brakes are SRAM Guide R's, which are overkill. We used the press fit BB that came with the bike, and I learned that you do not need the collar, just the two end pieces/bearings.

Couldn’t be happier with this purchase. My 10 year old ripper out grew his 24” Cannondale Cujo, but wasn’t quite big enough for an XS 27.5. He rides and races, so we needed something to fit well and be as light as possible. After searching, we decided to undertake this build. We used some old parts: XTR wheels, a Rock Shox SID fork, hydraulic brakes, his old handle bars, and a Thompson seat post with saddle. We bought a new crank, SLX drivetrain, and tires. It weighs in just below 22 lbs, and fits great. I can’t believe how much stronger of a rider he is on this bike. All told, we spent about $1000 on frame and parts, but ended up with a bike that would sell for around $3000. Such a great option if you have a little racer or rider, and aren’t looking to spend that kind of money every 2 years. Thank you DYI for providing reasonably priced options for this generally neglected segment of the riding population. The frame is beautiful, light, and strong.

With some patience and willingness to search out a few parts, the end result is a five+ star bike. We have two 10-year-old boys. One of the bikes we were able to build up mostly with parts from an old 26 inch mountain bike and the other we needed to purchase mostly new parts. - juddkulas@icloud.com The build with the parts from the old 26 comes in at 22.4 pounds with pedals and bottle cage and the one with the new parts built with a Manitou fork comes in at exactly 22 pounds with pedals and bottle cage. For the money we have in these bikes collectively they are unbeatable considering their weight and performance. Some build related notes: -use of straight steerer fork requires a fork race reducer. The two fork race reducers that I got off eBay did not seem to work as the bevel did not match the bevel on the lower bearing. I ended up getting a cane creek 40 IS 52/30 (lower bearing and race) -Best crank we could find was is the Cleary scout super Lightweight crank with a length of 152. Definitely did not want adult length cranks for the kiddos. -bikes are 1x11 with 11-46 cassettes and a 28 tooth chainring up front. Seems to allow them to climb pretty much everything efficiently and the only place they spin out is pavement/gravel downhills. -Best wheel deals we could find were bicycle wheel warehouse where u can get QR 100 front QR 135 in the rear that are decent quality for reasonable $$

Picked up a frame for my son when it seemed like there wouldn't be much available at shops this season. Used some 10spd parts I had left over from other bikes and a bunch of new parts for the build. He 3nded up with a light weight hard tail that will give him room to grow. He's 4'4" right now and is doing great trail riding, he's over 100 miles so far this season. I'm super impressed with the frame, but I would likely get the gloss finish next time. I'm probably going to get a 29er to rebuild my old hard tail next winter.

The 26” bike frame has been a great for our 8 year old (Around 4’4”). I purchased it after seeing the 27.5” Trek was really just too big and heavy for him on the trails. Fortunately, like many people, I had a box of old 26” sized bike parts that could be used, and found a few more parts and got it together. It’s not built super light at the minute, but it’s a MUCH better bike for our 8 year old on the trails and he was much more able to go out and ride for an hour or more on the trails with me. Probably lost 8-10 lbs. It’s built with a 27.5” sized fork, some older 8 speed drivetrain parts (to be upgraded at Christmas), 26” wheels and 2.3” Conti tires (I know the tires are backwards… I’ll fix it later, along w/ the steerer length, etc). It’s a little snug to drop out the rear wheel from the frame when removing it unless you back off the axle nut quite a bit more than “just loose” to clear the rear derailleur and the frame to pull the wheel out. Not a big deal, and may be fine with another rear der. You can run either a front derallier or an external dropper post with the internal routing. The routing pops out at the bottom bracket, so you’d need a cable housing stop for a cable actuated dropper. I’ve done this on another carbon frame.
